Kiev and Budapest signed an agreement on guaranteed capacities for the transportation of natural gas from Hungary to Ukraine from January 1, 2022. This was reported on the website of the Ukrainian GTS Operator.

The creation of capacities for imports from Hungary is said to be aimed at diversifying supply sources and enhancing Ukraine's energy security. Thus, Kiev increased its guaranteed capacity by almost 30 percent and opened access to new sources of natural gas, in particular, to the LNG terminal on the island of Krk in Croatia.

The agreement with Hungary will allow Ukraine to transport up to eight million cubic meters of natural gas per day. Together with the available 27 million cubic meters of gas from Slovakia, the total volume of imports to Ukraine will grow to 35 million cubic meters per day.

“For the first time since 2014, Ukraine has been increasing its guaranteed capacity for importing gas from Europe. The new agreement was signed with Hungary, from which Ukraine this year imported 90 percent of gas by virtual reverse. This demonstrates the market demand for the Hungarian-Ukrainian gas transportation route, so the agreement is beneficial to both parties, ”said Sergei Makogon, General Director of GTS Operator of Ukraine.

Earlier in December, it became known that Gazprom refused to sell more gas through Ukraine. At the auction, the Ukrainian gas transmission system operator offered transit capacities for January in the amount of up to 9.8 million cubic meters per day through the Sudzha gas distribution station and up to 5.2 million cubic meters through Sokhranovka. The Russian company did not want to sell more fuel, they remained unclaimed.
