UK retail sales in 2020 record decline

Record losses for stationary clothing stores, department stores and gas stations

The British retail sector suffered massively from the corona pandemic last year. Compared to the previous year, the sales in the industry fell by 1.9 percent, said the ONS statistics office. That's a record decline. Clothing stores, department stores and gas stations each suffered massive slumps.

In contrast, non-stationary retail showed a record increase of almost a third. Internet trade even increased by a good 46 percent.

According to the ONS, at the end of the year the retail sector benefited from the relaxation of the corona restrictions. Sales increased by 0.3 percent compared to November and 2.9 percent compared with the same month last year. The pre-crisis level of February was exceeded by 2.7 percent in December.
