UK joins “Asian NATO”

by alex

Britain plans to join the Asian counterpart of NATO, whose main adversary will be China. This is reported by The Spectator.

Earlier, Kurt Campbell, who will oversee Asian politics in the administration of US President Joe Biden, wrote a column for Foreign Affairs. In it, he outlined the main priorities of the United States in the region and plans to confront China.

In particular, Campbell supported the idea of creating a new group of countries called D-10, proposed by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In addition to the G7 countries, it will include Australia, India and South Korea, which traditionally oppose China. According to the American diplomat, such a coalition could deal with issues of trade, technology and so on.

For military purposes, Campbell proposes to expand the already existing format of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD), which is often called the “Asian NATO”. It currently includes the United States, Japan, Australia and India. According to The Spectator, the UK expects to join the alliance. Sources of The Telegraph in the British government do not deny this either.

Earlier, the new US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said about the growing hostility with China. According to the diplomat, more and more often “there are some hostile aspects” between the two countries. At the same time, the politician noted that in some areas Washington and Beijing are establishing cooperation.
