Paleontologists know that the huge predators Tyrannosaurus rex were quite slow. Their maximum speed reached 16-40 kilometers per hour. However, it turned out that, on average, these dinosaurs moved even slower – at the same speed as humans.
Scientists reported that the tyrannosaurus preferred to walk at a speed of about 5 kilometers per hour. This is even slightly less than the average preferred walking speed for humans. So, a person could overtake a Tyrannosaurus during an evening walk.
The researchers say this walking speed allowed the dinosaur to move using the least amount of energy possible.
This study shows that the iconic scene from the 1993 film Jurassic Park, in which a Tyrannosaurus chases a group of departing park visitors, is not very accurate.
