Luckily for Narly Pisco's mom, her son is doing well. Last week, the boy was rushed from a farm in the province of Mariscal Caceres to a hospital in Tarapoto for life-saving surgery.
An X-ray of his abdomen revealed eight needles, which doctors removed in less than two hours.
The regional government statement notes that in the peritoneum (lining the abdominal cavity) on the right side there were two needles; three on the left side; one in the abdominal wall; and two others “dangerously located” between the bladder and rectum.
Pisco expressed gratitude to the doctors who saved her son's life. “If not for their timely surgical intervention, his health would have deteriorated and the outcome would have been different,” she said.
The single mother said she took her son with her to work because there was no one else to look after the child. She didn't notice he swallowed the needles because she was working.
The needles are supposed to have been used for injections on the farm's livestock.
“I didn't realize it because I was focused on my job,” Pisco said. “Sometimes babies put things in their mouths when they crawl or start walking.”
Doctors treated small wounds to the boy’s small intestine. He was temporarily put on a diet containing only liquids and was discharged from the hospital within a few days.
Doctors reported the incident to local authorities because they could not understand how the boy could have swallowed so many needles. They suspected that he might have been mistreated. The investigation continues.
Recall that in Vietnam, a woman caused a lot of surprise by saying that she had not slept for more than 11 years. It all started with a strange crying attack.
