Ankara plans to include two more countries in the agreement on Nagorno-Karabakh. This was announced by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu following talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, he was quoted by RIA Novosti.

According to him, the agreement should be expanded to the “3 + 3” format. So, it will include Iran and Georgia – the agreement has already been signed by Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“A truce has been established in Karabakh, and we want it to continue. But desire alone is not enough, the support of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and other leaders is needed (…), ”the Turkish minister stressed.

In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited mainly by Armenians, proclaimed independence from Azerbaijan, which it was part of during the Soviet era, after which the war began. In 1994, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), mediated by Russia, concluded a truce, which was periodically violated.

Regular battles on the demarcation line between Azerbaijan and NKR broke out on September 27, 2020. They continued until November 10, when Baku, Yerevan and Moscow adopted a joint ceasefire statement. As a result of the war, Azerbaijan regained a number of territories lost in the early 1990s.
