Two balls in front of the penalty
Denmark heroically fought their way into extra time against England, a controversial penalty brought the decision in the semifinals.
Kane shoots England in extra time into the European Championship final
The VAR trouble with Denmark is huge, because the decisive England penalty in the 1: 2 in the semifinals should not have counted for two reasons.
In the 104th minute there was a momentous whistle for the Danes, Raheem Sterling fell in the penalty area. But this scene shouldn't have existed in the first place, at this point there was a second ball on the field – referee Danny Makkelie should have blown the whistle and continued the game with the referee ball.
The actual penalty foul by Yannik Verstergaard was also controversial, because Sterling took off very theatrically after a light touch on the knee.
The VAR did not intervene because it was not a clearly wrong decision. So Harry Kane stepped up, failed to Kasper Schmeichel, but then made the 2-1 decision in the margin
