Türkiye Blocked Instagram: What's the Reason

by alex

The media claims that the sanctions against Instagram may be related to the liquidation of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.

The Information Technology and Communications Authority of Turkey blocked access to Instagram on Friday, August 2. The administration did not report the reasons for the blocking or its duration.

This was reported by the Turkish service of Deutsche Welle.

The publication notes that the probable reason for the sanctions against Instagram was criticism of the platform by the head of the communications department Fahrettin Altun. He drew attention to the fact that Instagram was massively deleting messages expressing condolences over the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Altun wrote on his X page that “this is a very clear and obvious attempt at censorship.” However, no Turkish official has stated that the Instagram blocking is related to the social network’s reaction to the assassination of the Palestinian terrorist leader.

Cyber law expert Yaman Akdeniz said in a post on the X platform that the reason for blocking Instagram access for Turkish users was “a threat to national security and the protection of public order.”

The publication notes that in recent years, the Turkish authorities have blocked access to YouTube, Wikipedia, and the X social platform for various reasons.

In addition, after Haniyeh’s murder, the Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) launched an investigation into the broadcasts of the Halk TV channel.

“We cannot accept the mentality of media people, who are not concerned with the brutal martyrdom of those who defend the legitimate cause of Palestine, but justify criminals,” said RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin.

The investigation was prompted by a Halk TV program that discussed how Israel carried out an operation to eliminate the leader of Hamas in Iran.

Recall that after the assassination of the leader of Hamas, Iran's Supreme Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered a direct strike on Israel. One of the options for the strike is a coordinated attack from Iran, Yemen, Syria and Iraq to achieve maximum effect.
