Turkey offered Greece to “make peace” and resolve the conflict over the right to drill offshore in the Eastern Mediterranean. This was stated by the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Mevlut Cavusoglu, quoted by Reuters.
He stressed that Ankara is open to dialogue. At the same time, Cavusoglu believes that Athens is deliberately trying to provoke the Turkish side.
On August 15, it became known that a Turkish submarine was found in the territorial waters of Greece. Two days earlier, France deployed military equipment to the Mediterranean to support the Greek side.
Earlier this month, it was reported that relations between Greece and Turkey had worsened again. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Athens did not respect the agreement with Ankara and did not stop operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. According to him, Greece resumed drilling operations contrary to the agreements.
The contradictions over the coast in the Eastern Mediterranean arose in 1974 – then a coup d'etat took place in Cyprus, associated with an attempt by Greece to annex the island. Turkey sent troops to the north of Cyprus and proclaimed a Turkish Cypriot federal state there, later it was renamed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The rest of the island is now under the control of the government of the Republic of Cyprus. Turkey has repeatedly called for joint development of deposits by Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, allowing for cooperation with Russia.
