Ankara expressed its readiness to help de-escalate and reduce tensions between Russia and Ukraine. This was stated by the press secretary of the leader of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan Ibrahim Kalyn, quoted by Interfax.
“We call on both sides to reduce the level of tension as soon as possible in order to take the necessary steps to prevent a military conflict in the Donbass in eastern Ukraine,” he stressed.
According to Kalyn, Turkey and Erdogan personally are ready to play a role in resolving the situation, as the Turkish leader announced to the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Vladimir Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
The spokesman added that the head of state will help to implement the policy of sound diplomacy and achieve results in this process. He pointed out that it is Turkey that can provide assistance in the settlement, since it has good relations with Moscow and Kiev.
Kalyn noted that Ankara is concerned about the developing situation and continues to monitor it. He concluded that in a global context, one should talk about the confrontation between Russia and NATO.
Earlier, Salih Yilmaz, a professor at Yıldırım Beyazit University in Ankara, pointed to the disinterest of the United States in the world in Ukraine. The political scientist explained that the hot conflict in Ukraine, albeit limited in scale, could become an important trump card for the United States in its confrontation with Russia.
