Newly elected President USA Donald Trump announced his intention to rename the country's highest point, Mount Denali in Alaska, and return its name to it – McKinley (25th President of the United States).
He said this during a speech the day before in Phoenix, reports Fox News.
“McKinley was a very good, perhaps a great president,” Trump said.
The mountain was renamed by former US President Barack Obama in 2015. The new name was intended to reflect the traditions of Alaska Natives and the privileges of many people in the region, as the word “Denali” was used by the Athabascan tribe, meaning “tall” or “big.”
In 1896, a prospector named the peak “Mount McKinley” in honor of President William McKinley, who had never been to Alaska. The name was officially recognized by the US government until Barack Obama changed it, despite resistance from legislators in McKinley's home state of Ohio.
