Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she intends to talk to newly elected US President Donald Trump amid his statements about wanting to take control Greenland.

“We have offered to talk to Trump, and I expect that to happen,” she told reporters.
The Danish Prime Minister also added that Trump has not yet responded to her request.
At the same time, she noted that there is “no reason to believe that the newly elected US president is planning an invasion of Greenland and emphasized the close cooperation between the two NATO allies.”

In December 2024, Donald Trump said that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” Trump threatened to take away the Panama Canal and buy Greenland for U.S. national security. He had expressed interest in buying the island during his first term as president. Trump refused to rule out the possibility of using military action to buy Greenland.
Following Trump's statement, Denmark decided to significantly increase its defense spending on Greenland and also changed the royal coat of arms.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lykke Rasmussen ruled out the possibility of Greenland becoming a subject of the United States. True, Denmark is not going to sell anything and it does not need the money.
