During Trump's first presidential term, the leaders of the United States and the DPRK met three times.
The team of US President-elect Donald Trump is discussing direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
This was reported by Reuters with reference to two people familiar with the situation.
The agency's interlocutors noted that Trump's initial goal could be to restore basic contacts between the United States and the DPRK, but future political goals have not yet been determined.
As Reuters recalled, during Trump's first presidential term, the leaders of the United States and the DPRK met three times: in Singapore, in Hanoi, and on the border between the DPRK and South Korea, in the demilitarized zone. The diplomatic efforts then yielded no concrete results, despite Trump's assurances that he and the North Korean leader had “fallen in love.”
On Friday, November 22, Donald Trump named one of the men who implemented the initial North Korea strategy, former State Department official Alex Wong, as deputy national security adviser.
“As deputy special representative for North Korea, he helped facilitate my summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un,” Trump said in a statement.
North Korean state media, however, have made no public mention of Trump's reelection, and Kim Jong Un said this month that the United States was escalating tensions and provocations, raising the risk of a nuclear wars.
It is not yet clear what result the new diplomatic efforts will bring – discussions are ongoing, and Trump has not yet made a final decision.
Recall that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un accused the United States of America of escalating tensions and provocations, and also stated that the Korean Peninsula has never faced such risks of nuclear war as now.
