Trump Targets Electric Vehicles, Rescinds Biden Order

U.S. President Donald Trump took aim at electric vehicles on Monday, rescinding a 2021 executive order signed by his predecessor Joe Biden that required half of all new vehicles sold in the United States to be electric by 2030 electric.

Reuters reports this.

Biden's 50% target, which has no legal force, has won support from U.S. and foreign automakers.

Trump said in an executive order that he would stop distributing unspent government funds for vehicle charging stations from a $5 billion fund, called for ending an exemption for states from adopting zero-emission vehicle rules through 2035, and said his administration would consider eliminating tax credits for electric vehicles.

Trump plans to direct the Environmental Protection Agency to review rules requiring automakers to sell between 30% and 56% electric vehicles by 2032 to meet federal emissions rules, as well as parallel rules issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

On Monday, Trump noted that he is seeking to overturn a waiver granted to California in December by the EPA that allows the state to stop selling gasoline-only vehicles until 2035. The rule has been adopted by 11 other states.

Recall that Trump has launched a project to develop artificial intelligence in the U.S..
