US President Donald Trump has given preliminary approval for a US airstrike on Iran's main nuclear facility, the underground uranium enrichment plant at Fordow.

This was reported by the American news service CBS News.

According to the publication, Trump has been briefed on the risks and benefits of striking Fordow. He believes that disabling the facility is necessary because it is the only place where Iran can build a nuclear weapon in the shortest possible time.

“He believes there is little choice. Completing the work means destroying Fordow,” one of the publication's sources said.

The publication confirmed that Trump approved plans to attack Iran on the evening of June 17. However, he has not yet made a final decision on the matter.

Trump expects Iran to voluntarily abandon its nuclear program and there will no longer be a need to strike Fordow.

Meanwhile, American intelligence has provided the White House with reports indicating the approximate speed at which Tehran is developing nuclear weapons.

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe testified in closed-door hearings that Iran is believed to be close to obtaining nuclear weapons.

Ratcliffe's statement does not coincide with the official position of US intelligence, which believes that the Iranian leadership did not give an official order to create a nuclear bomb. This is the information that the US intelligence community provided to Congress.

Earlier, sources told The Guardian that Donald Trump did not dare to strike Iran's nuclear facility in Fordow due to doubts about the ability of the GBU-57 bomb to penetrate to the required depth and guarantee the destruction of this underground plant.

Recall that on Thursday, June 19, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump would make a decision on Iran within the next two weeks
