The Republican Party, whose representative is the current US President Donald Trump, spoke about the possibility of a peaceful transfer of power after the presidential elections scheduled for November. As the leader of the Republican majority in the US Senate Mitch McConnell said on his Twitter account, the procedure will take place in due course.
“The winner will be inaugurated on January 20. The transfer will take place in accordance with the plan, like every four years, starting in 1792, ”the politician stressed.
Earlier in September, Trump, speaking to reporters at a White House press conference, dodged a direct answer to the question of whether he would guarantee that the post-election handover would be peaceful. “Let's see what happens,” he said. At the same time, the head of state doubted that he would have to transfer power to someone based on the results of the elections.
Prior to this, Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders urged Americans to prepare for a “nightmare scenario” of the situation in the country after the elections, in which Trump will declare himself the winner regardless of the voting results and refuse to voluntarily leave his post.
Other representatives of the Democratic Party also expressed doubts about the willingness of the incumbent to leave the White House in case of defeat in the elections. For example, former US Secretary of State and Democratic candidate for the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton, noted that Trump may try to challenge the election results, citing violations committed during the mail vote. The main opponent of the American leader in the upcoming elections, former US Vice President Joe Biden, said that Trump will face a military coup if he refuses to admit defeat in the elections.
Trump himself had previously stated that the mail-order vote was the only reason he could lose the election. At the same time, he noted that he was ready to admit his defeat in the elections in case of appropriate results.
