Biden told Trump he hoped for a “smooth transition” in January 2025.
“We look forward to, as we said, a smooth transition, doing everything we can to make sure that you are satisfied with what you need,” Biden said. “Welcome, welcome back.”
Trump thanked Biden in turn.
“Politics is tough, and in many cases it's not a very nice world, but today it's a nice world. I really appreciate a smooth transition, one that's as smooth as possible. I really appreciate that, Joe. Thank you,” he said.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump were greeted at the White House by First Lady Jill Biden. She also sent an official invitation to future first lady Melania Trump, but according to media reports, the latter declined the meeting.
White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zints and future White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles also met with Biden and Trump.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said over the weekend that Biden and Trump would discuss domestic and foreign policy issues.
Biden “taught” Trump a lesson
President-elect Donald Trump and incumbent President Joe Biden are long-standing political rivals. Note that during his presidency, Trump refused to meet with Biden and simply left him a letter at the White House.
Thus, after losing the 2020 election, Trump broke two traditions that demonstrate the peaceful transfer of power in American democracy.
First, he refused to invite then-President-elect Biden to the White House for weeks after the race, claiming that he had not lost. He subsequently skipped Biden's inauguration, leaving Washington just hours before the ceremony began.
Before Election Day, the White House said Biden would attend the inauguration regardless of who wins.
Earlier, the media reported that Trump would soon appoint a special representative for Ukraine to negotiate an end to the war.
