Trump Makes Unexpected Russia Promise After NATO Summit — The Washington Post

US President Donald Trump said that Russia will not attack NATO while he is in power.

Trump Promises NATO Security from Russia

US President Donald Trump expressed strong support for the alliance after threatening to leave it after a NATO summit on Wednesday. He began the main session with positive words about defense spending and promised that Russia would never attack NATO while he was president.

The Washington Post reports this.

“These people really love their countries,” Trump told reporters. “This is not a hoax, and we are here to help them.”

Other leaders praised Trump’s efforts to boost European defense spending and endorsed his strikes on Iran. Many saw flattery as an effective way to reach Trump’s heart. He stayed through the speech, listening to other leaders.

Changing Rhetoric and Increasing Defense Spending

Trump’s support for NATO came after 32 NATO countries agreed to more than double their defense spending targets, an issue that has long been a major issue for Trump. The turnaround marks a significant change from his first term, when he regularly expressed reluctance to defend Europe, and from the early months of this year, when he leaned toward a reset with Vladimir Putin and threatened Ukraine.

WP sources noted that Trump never mentioned Russia after that. He spent most of the day defending his strikes on Iran, despite the fact that most of the summit events were devoted to European defense, increasing spending, and combating threats, the main one being Russia.

Trump’s change of course was the result of considerable efforts by other NATO members to please him. Trump slept in the royal palace, received complimentary messages from the NATO secretary general, and watched as leaders spoke in a closed-door meeting to praise him for his leadership and the recent attack on Iran.

Recall that US President Donald Trump publicly accused Democrats of leaking classified information about the American operation related to nuclear facilities in Iran, and demands that those responsible be held accountable.
