The United States judicial system remains the only check on Donald Trump's authoritarian rule.
The US judicial system is the only force holding back the Donald Trump administration from establishing authoritarian rule and dictatorship.
This was stated by Professor Igor Eisenberg of the Manhattan University during an appearance on the Espresso TV channel.
“You can feel Trump's attempts to create an authoritarian government in the United States, and if he succeeds, then a dictatorship. This can be felt in all of Trump's actions since January 20. I would say that he has already done more in this direction than can be expected,” Eisenberg noted.
The professor compared the situation in the United States with Germany in the early 1930s and Russia in the late 1990s.
“Compared to Russia, in my opinion, it is much more difficult to establish a dictatorship in the US than Putin managed to do in his time. After all, the US has institutions – an independent court. However, the current American authorities are already showing that they can implement court decisions, or they can be slow in implementing them,” he added.
Eisenberg says the country is moving toward the dismantling of democracy. One of the most striking examples, he says, is the work of immigration enforcement, which Democratic vice presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo.”
“Because this is how the police operate: without court orders, they grab people on the streets, farms, construction sites, in stores and take them away to unknown destinations,” the professor emphasized.
Eisenberg also recalled that there have been previous cases in which a California senator was subjected to violent detention, and Democratic lawmakers were not allowed to visit detention facilities despite their legal right to access federal government facilities.
“What we see is the movement of the United States towards the establishment of an authoritarian regime, a dictatorship. In Congress, the majority of Republicans in both chambers, respectively, fully support Trump's actions. The only thing that is holding back this movement is the judicial system, which is absolutely independent from the executive branch,” Eisenberg emphasized.
There are already more than 200 court orders that have halted the Trump administration's actions, he said.
