Trump has decided on a candidate for national security adviser: what is his attitude towards Ukraine

Waltz spoke out against Ukraine joining NATO and raised the issue of how the weapons provided to Ukraine are overseen.

US President-elect Donald Trump said he would appoint Republican Mike Waltz as his national security adviser security.

This was reported by Reuters.

Waltz will be responsible for advising Trump on key national security issues and coordinating with various agencies. This post is currently held by Jake Sullivan.

What is known about Mike Waltz

As AP recalls, Waltz is a US Army veteran and the first Green Beret (he served in the US Special Operations Forces) to become a congressman. He is considered a “hawk” towards China. Waltz called on the US to boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing due to China's likely involvement in the emergence of COVID-19 and the ongoing mistreatment of the Muslim Uighur population. He was a sharp critic of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

After Russia's full-scale invasion, Waltz called on the Biden administration to provide Kyiv with more weapons. He criticized the Biden administration for slow and untimely support for Ukraine, as well as insufficient sanctions against the Russian Federation.

As journalist Ostap Yarysh recalled, in Congress, Mike Waltz initially supported bills with the help of Ukraine and even came to Kiev as part of congressional delegations. But in April 2024, he voted against additional funding of $60 billion.

“The era of bottomless checks for Ukraine from Congress is over. Europe must do more for Ukraine, the United States must protect its southern border,” Mike Waltz said at the time.

Mike Waltz also spoke out against Ukraine's accession to NATO and raised the issue of how weapons provided to Ukraine are monitored and whether they end up on the black market after crossing the border. However, it cannot be said that the politician is ready to abandon Ukraine “to the mercy of fate.”

“If Putin succeeds in Ukraine, he will not stop until he drags NATO countries into it… Stopping Russia before it drags NATO and the United States into war is the right thing to do,” he said.

Earlier, the media reported that one of Trump's candidates for the post of Pentagon chief refused the appointment.
