The US Senate is unhappy that the Trump administration continues to delay the introduction of new sanctions against Russia.
Three senators — Jeanne Shaheen, Elizabeth Warren and Chris Coons — have announced an investigation into the Trump administration, which has not imposed new sanctions on Russia for more than five months over its war in Ukraine. All three senators are Democrats.
The Hill writes about this.
“Instead of using available leverage against the aggressor, President Trump does nothing. We will investigate this missed opportunity to bring the war to an end,” the senators said.
It is noted that since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January, the United States has not imposed any new sanctions against Russia — in some cases, it has even relaxed restrictions. For comparison, under Joe Biden, Washington imposed more than 6,200 sanctions against Moscow-linked entities — an average of more than 170 per month.
The idea that such inaction allows Vladimir Putin to continue the war and even escalate it is gaining increasing popularity in the Senate.
“Americans should ask why a president who promises to end the war allows the aggressor to act with impunity,” they said.
Recall that on May 18, in an interview with CBC News, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that America would presumably introduce new sanctions against Russia if peace in Ukraine is not achieved. In particular, the 500% tariffs on imports from countries buying Russian energy resources initiated by Graham. The Secretary of State reported that the bill is already supported by 77 senators, and if their number increases to 80, this will allow the US Senate to introduce restrictions independently, bypassing the White House.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration is pressuring the Senate to soften the bill on sanctions against Russia.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the decisive factor in ending Russia's war against Ukraine could be the political will of Western leaders, in particular Donald Trump.
