Former White House head Donald Trump has officially become a candidate for US President from the Republican Party.

Reuters writes about this.

The Republican Party officially nominated the former president as its 2024 presidential candidate at the start of the party's national convention in Milwaukee.

The day before, Trump announced on social networks that he had selected Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his vice presidential pick.

Other potential Republican candidates for vice president were Florida Senator Marco Rubio and North Dakota Governor Doug Bergem.

“After much thought and consideration, and considering the extraordinary talents of many others, I have decided that the man best qualified to fill the office of Vice President of the United States is Senator J. D. Vance of the great State of Ohio,” wrote Trump.

What is known about the Republican vice presidential candidate

According to Reuters, the choice of James David Vance could increase the likelihood that Trump fans will turn out to vote on November 5, since the Ohio native is very popular among the Republican Party.

At age 39, Vance will represent the younger generation in an election that will pit Trump, 78, against President Biden, 81.

Vance's meteoric rise was unusual in American politics. After a rough and poor childhood in southern Ohio, he served in the Marine Corps, received a scholarship to Yale Law School, and later worked in San Francisco.

In 2016, he released his memoirs, “Elegy of the Highlanders.” In it, the author reflects on growing up in a low-income family drawn to violence and drug addiction in Middletown, Ohio.

Previously, in one of his interviews, Vance called himself a “never-Trump guy” – a guy who is categorically against Trump. He also called the US President “American Hitler.” However, in the summer of 2021, in an interview with Fox News, Vance apologized for these words.

As James D. Vance prepared to run for the U.S. Senate in Ohio in 2022, he emerged as one of the former president's most consistent defenders, backing Trump even when some Senate colleagues refused to do so.
