Trump begins talks with lawyers on defense strategy at impeachment hearings

by alex

Former US President Donald Trump has begun talks with lawyers to develop a defense strategy for an upcoming impeachment hearing in the US Senate. This is reported by CNN, citing sources familiar with the situation.

In particular, Trump has already held meetings with lawyer Butch Bowers, who agreed to defend his interests in the impeachment process. They were brought together by Republican Senator Lindsay Graham, who helps the politician with the selection of lawyers.

However, according to the publication, Trump has not yet assembled a full-fledged team of lawyers. Some law firms reportedly doubted they would be paid for services provided, and other lawyers refused to take the case out of their unwillingness to be associated with the January 6 Capitol riots.

Earlier, representatives of the lower house of the US Congress submitted a resolution to impeach Trump to the Senate. Thus, the process of impeachment of the politician was formally launched in the upper house of the US Congress. By agreement of the parties, impeachment hearings in the Senate will begin on February 8.

On January 14, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump in the wake of the recent riots in Washington. The last vote was the second attempt to remove the politician from office. He became the first US president to be impeached for the second time, especially after resigning. Democrats motivate the decision to impeach Trump, including by the fact that after the end of the process, he will not be able to run for president.
