He said that any peace proposals from the West would be perceived as a sign of weakness.
Senator Mike Rounds, one of the new US president's top allies, has sharply criticized the idea of negotiating a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, saying that the Kremlin cannot be trusted and that any peace proposals from the West will be perceived as a sign of weakness.
He spoke about this in his speech at the International Security Forum in Halifax, Politico reports.
“As much as I would like to believe that we can negotiate with a tyrant, I suspect that we may be fooling ourselves. […] Do you believe that this tyrant, if you offer him a piece of a free country, do you think he will stop? I wish I could say there is an easy way out, but there is not,” Rounds said.
He noted that his comments do not reflect the official position of the incoming Trump administration. At the same time, these statements reflect pro-Ukrainian sentiments that have broad support among Senate Republicans, despite the fact that MAGA has been trying to persuade Trump to cut military aid to Ukraine since he took office in January.
These words came after criticism from Anna Hopko, a Ukrainian civil society leader and former lawmaker, who expressed disappointment with the United States' slowness in transferring weapons and easing restrictions on their use.
“I'm just so frustrated that we haven't been able to provide them with all the equipment and all the weapons systems that they need to respond to the absolute tyranny that is coming from Russia. I wonder why we didn't do it faster than we did,” Rounds said.
Recall that it became known who Trump plans to make Secretary of the Treasury USA.
