This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs (2014-2019) Pavel Klimkin in an interview for the project “Remarks” by TSN journalist Maria Vasilyeva.
Europe is in panic
According to Klimkin, Europeans are very worried about the American elections. The EU is afraid that Trump will be unpredictable.
“And he can be like that. He has a certain environment with which he has the opportunity to communicate. But even people who know him well say he can go here or there. He first says one thing about Ukraine, and then says no, Ukraine cool,” says the ex-minister.
Trump will stop aid to Ukraine
“American foreign policy is also focused on domestic policy. Now on June 27 there will be the first Biden-Trump debate. Not an easy debate, it is difficult to find so many different people. And a lot is said in terms of debate.
Trump says one thing today, another tomorrow, a third… He can say – I need Ukraine and Russia to talk, but I will increase assistance to Ukraine. Or, if something doesn’t happen, I will put pressure on Russia. Or if Ukraine doesn’t want to talk, I’ll find leverage,” Klimkin argues.
The diplomat believes that Ukraine needs to talk to Trump. But Klimkin is not sure that it is possible to talk to Trump in advance.
“Meet and say: “Donald, we have a plan, or two plans.” He will listen carefully, but that doesn’t mean it will work,” the diplomat warns.
Trump is not good or bad for Ukraine
Klimkin calls for a calm attitude towards Trump’s individual statements.
“Trump is not good or bad for Ukraine. He is different from Biden. I think Biden 2.0 will also be different from the first,” he concluded.
