The only thing that interests Putin is negotiations on Ukraine's capitulation, Thomas Graham noted.
The administration of US President Donald Trump faces two difficult questions. First, how to get Putin to sit down at the negotiating table and negotiate honestly. Second, how to reach a settlement that would be acceptable to Putin and Russia and meet the minimum needs of the United States, our Ukrainian partners, and our European allies.
This was stated by Thomas Graham, distinguished fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, special assistant to the President of the United States, and senior director for Russian affairs on the National Security Council staff in 2004-2007, at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) discussion “Securing Ukraine's Future: What the United States Should Do.”?.
According to Graham, it is not yet clear how to achieve this. Because the only thing that interests Putin is negotiations on Ukraine's capitulation.
“He has put forward a number of demands: (Ukraine's – ed.) refusal to join NATO; recognition of the annexation of four (Ukrainian – ed.) regions; demilitarization and denazification; and, by the way, the West must lift sanctions. Putin sees no reason to compromise at this stage, because in his head everything is going the way he wants. His economy is resistant to Western sanctions. He sees the personnel problems that Ukrainians are facing. He also sees the weak support of the West. Therefore, if you are sitting in the Kremlin, why should you negotiate? Time is on my (Putin's – ed.) side,” the American expert noted.
Recall that Marco Rubio said that the future of Ukraine is under threat due to the war and mass emigration of the population. The US Secretary of State noted that the war in Ukraine has dragged on. In his opinion, negotiations and concessions from both sides are necessary.
