Joe Biden
Democratic candidate Joe Biden accused the incumbent President Donald Trump of unwillingness to support the Belarusian opposition. RIA Novosti reports.
According to Biden, President Alexander Lukashenko responded with “inhuman violence” to the “pro-democratic movement” in the country, demanding new elections. He noted that Trump did not react in any way to the “fictitious” Lukashenka's inauguration ceremony and refused to provide assistance to the Belarusian opposition.
The democrat said that if he wins the elections, he will defend democratic values and stand on the side of those who support them. He also called on the Belarusian authorities to hold new fair elections and release political prisoners.
Earlier, the former presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya met with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent and asked him about possible options for overcoming the crisis. Tikhanovskaya raised the issue of potential assistance from the US, EU and Russia in organizing a dialogue on the holding of new presidential elections. She thanked Kent for the firm and consistent US position on the Lukashenka regime and recalled the importance of supporting civil society.
