President of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR) Vladislav Tretyak spoke about the early completion of the 2022 World Youth Championship in Canada. His words are quoted by Match TV.
The specialist said that the cancellation of the tournament was the only sure way out of the situation. “The fate of titles and medals should be decided only on the ice. And if, under the threat of covid, one has to cancel one match after another right in the course of the championship, it is obvious that the title cannot be played in such conditions, ”explained Tretyak.
The cancellation of the World Youth Hockey Championship became known on the evening of December 29. This decision was made due to outbreaks of coronavirus in several teams. In the Russian national team, two players became infected, they were sent to quarantine. It is known that the test for coronavirus turned out to be positive, including for 17-year-old Matvey Michkov, who scored three goals in two matches with Sweden and Switzerland.
Before the end of the championship, it became known about the cancellation of the match between the national teams of Russia and Slovakia. The Russian team was awarded a technical defeat with a score of 0: 1. Teams from the United States and the Czech Republic, where cases of coronavirus were also identified, were also awarded technical injuries.
