Archaeologists excavated the tomb in Egypt, in the necropolis of South Asasif on the West Bank of Luxor. The tomb dates back to the Middle Kingdom (1938-1630 BC) and is the first example of this period to be found in this necropolis.
This was reported by Heritage Daily, citing the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Inside the tomb, archaeologists discovered the remains of coffins containing the burials of men, women and children, indicating that the site was used by several generations of one family during the 12th and early 13th Dynasties. The burials were heavily damaged by the flood, which destroyed most of the wooden coffins and linen fabrics used in mummification.
Among the artifacts found in the tomb are jewelry such as semi-precious stone beads, bracelets, rings, as well as glazed blue-green porcelain and painted stone with images of hippos, falcons and snakes. Mohamed Abdel-Badi, head of the Central Artifacts Department of Upper Egypt, highlighted the unique items, including a rare green-blue faience figurine, two copper mirrors, and an amethyst and agate necklace.
As the South Asasif Conservation Project noted, this discovery provides a deeper understanding of the Middle Kingdom burial rituals in the Theban necropolis and provides an excellent collection of preserved jewelry.
“Further investigation of the Middle Kingdom burials in the South Asasif necropolis will significantly accelerate our ongoing research into the influence of the Middle Kingdom on the art and funerary rituals of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty,” the scientists noted.
Archaeologists have recently discovered an ancient city that is 4,000 years old. People lived in the ancient settlement for about a thousand years.
