Transparency International has updated its Corruption Perceptions Index: where Ukraine is

Over the past 2022, Ukraine has improved its performance in the Corruption Perceptions Index. This is the result of the work of anti-corruption agencies.

This was reported on January 31 in Transparency International. It was noted that Ukraine received 33 points out of 100 in the rating.

In total, the rating includes 180 countries. Ukraine ranks 116th among them.

Over the past 10 years, Ukraine's index has grown by 8 points. The points scored by Ukraine in 2022 is the highest indicator of our country since the launch of the updated methodology, noted the Ukrainian branch of Transparency International Ukraine.

The indicator could actually be better

According to the researchers, the report did not include anti-corruption scandals in Ukraine in January. They will likely be involved in the 2023 results. Andrey Borovik, executive director of TIU, said that the latest high-profile cases concern procurement during the war. According to him, this affects the reputation abroad.

“If data that does not pose a security threat continues to be closed, e-declarations of officials will not be restored, and in general, Ukrainians will have extremely limited opportunities to find out the work of government, we will lose our positions faster than we can imagine,” Borovik said.

What you need to fight corruption

Transparency International noted that at the beginning of 2022, Ukraine received 5 recommendations to combat corruption. One was not completed at all, and 4 were partially completed. The researchers positively assessed the election of a new head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and the approval of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy. 7662, which contains significant risks and contradicts the updated conclusion of the Venice Commission, the researchers warn.

The organization has provided new recommendations to combat corruption in 2023. These are the steps:

  • select professional leaders for the Agency for Tracing and Management of Assets, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption;
  • implement the reform of constitutional justice, taking into account the findings of the Venice Commission, update judicial self-government bodies;
  • open all data that does not harm the defense;
  • use the Prozorro public procurement system to update Ukraine.
