Bandits in Mexico have begun to use jet skis more often to attack the country's popular beaches, with tourists most often the victims. A surge in crime in the popular tourist destination was warned by Insider.

It is clarified that the robbers usually stop next to the victim, then shoot at her, and after one of the criminals takes everything of value, they hide in an unknown direction. Over the past 4 months, the number of such crimes has increased.

One of the latest cases, when criminals committed a robbery using jet skis, occurred on January 25 on the beach in Playa del Carmen, where an Argentine citizen became a victim.

Last December, a similar incident occurred at a popular tourist beach in Cancun. Three armed criminals opened fire at a crowded recreation area and then fled. No casualties were reported.

The last burst of violence with this scenario occurred in 2016, when 4 attacks were carried out against the backdrop of the ongoing war between local gangs. “Actually, this is not such a new method of attack. Jet skis were used before for smuggling. Beach crime will continue as long as street drug sales, prostitution and the slave trade take place there,” said John Sullivan, founder and editor of Mexican magazine Small Wars-El Centro.

To counter organized crime, the Mexican government will increase armed police protection at popular beaches. At the moment, up to 1,500 police officers and National Guardsmen are involved in such events.

On January 24, in Mexico, near her home in Tijuana, journalist Lourdes Maldonado, who had previously won a lawsuit against former Baja California Governor Jaime Bonilla Valdez, was shot dead.
