An Argentine couple were vacationing in the Red Valley, part of Peru's Cusco region, when the weather disaster struck. Gabriela Basallo, 32, died instantly in front of her husband, Samuel Andres Sierra, who was reportedly seriously injured in the incident.
Police found Gabriela's body on Tuesday, November 12, with burns sustained in the accident, police said.
The couple were traveling through a picturesque region of the South American country, which boasts mountains of orange and red.
According to local media reports, the death of the young woman from Buenos Aires, who was also the mother of a 10-year-old boy, was reported by guide Efrain Zamora Galindo. The couple were said to be descending from the mountain when Gabriela was struck by lightning.
Samuel was quickly taken to the hospital for medical attention, and Gabriela's body was taken to the morgue for an autopsy. The prosecutor's office is investigating this incident.
Galindo also said that Krasnaya Dolina is known for its terrain and unpredictable weather, the region “frequently experiences snowfalls and rains.”
