The West is slowly starting to run out of sanctions against Russia. Tougher steps could harm the European countries themselves.

Andreas Umland, a German analyst at the Stockholm Center for Eastern European Studies, spoke about this. According to him, the sanctions against Russia are gradually weakening, because the West itself may suffer from further tough actions. For example, if they impose restrictions on Russian gas.

The 7th package of sanctions is not as severe as the previous ones

Of course, one should not assume that the 7th package of sanctions is a formality that will not hit Russia. No, there, for example, there will be restrictions on the Savings Bank. But the analyst notes that the West is starting to run out of relevant instruments against Russia.

Previously, sanctions were tougher. But the West is running out of tools. Now they are just looking for what else they can do so as not to make themselves worse than the Russians. It is already difficult now,” Umland said.

In his opinion, the West still has an important instrument of pressure on Russia for the future. This is the introduction of secondary sanctions against Western and international firms that continue to cooperate with the occupiers and help them circumvent the restrictions. Here it was possible to seriously work.

Recall that the European Union still approved the 7th package of sanctions against Russia. One of the main prohibitions is the restriction on the purchase, import and transfer of Russian gold and other jewelry.

Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky stressed that the existing sanctions against Russia are not enough. The occupiers must pay a much higher price for a full-scale invasion. In particular, the EU must necessarily impose sanctions against Russian gas.
