Tombs with mummies carved into the rock found in Egypt
Scientists from the University of Santo Domingo of the Dominican Republic, conducting archaeological work in the temple of Taposiris Magna in western Alexandria, have discovered 16 tombs with mummies carved into the rocks, Egypt Independent reports .
Burials of this type were typical of the Greco-Roman era. There were mummies inside the tombs, but their condition is assessed as poor. The bodies were placed in gilded material, and gold foil amulets were placed in the mouth. According to experts, this, according to ancient beliefs, will help a person speak at the trial in the afterlife.
Two mummies attracted special attention of archaeologists. One of them had gilded jewelry depicting Osiris, the other had a crown decorated with horns and feathers.
At the end of last year, 59 intact sarcophagi were found in Egypt.
