President of Kazakhstan Tokayev announced that he is taking control of the country's Security Council

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev removed Nursultan Nazarbayev from office and announced that he was taking control of the country's Security Council in his place. He announced this during his address to the nation on January 5, which was broadcast on state television.
The head of state also said that in a situation with protests he intends to “act tough”.
“This is a question of the safety of our citizens, who make numerous requests to me to protect their lives and the lives of their families,” Tokayev said and expressed confidence that the people would support him.
He also promised to come up with new proposals for the political transformation of Kazakhstan soon.
