The authors noted that it is possible to scratch the protective glass of a smartphone if the owner is used to laying it with the screen down. Then the front surface of the device will be in contact with fine particles of dust and sand, which are present everywhere. “There is always sand in dirty pockets or bags,” the journalists said. The experts called book covers and similar accessories undesirable as they can literally press grains of sand into the display.
Curved displays tend to break more often due to the complex design of the device. The display can be damaged by dropping the device onto a hard surface. Despite the abundance of protective films, the best way to fight scratches on the device screen is directly tempered glass.
According to the Mohs scale, which has been used since the beginning of the 19th century, the relative hardness of tempered smartphone glass is 6-6.5 points. For comparison, a stainless steel knife blade has a hardness of 5.5, an alloy coin has a hardness of 3, a diamond or sapphire crystal of a watch has a hardness of 10. Therefore, it is almost impossible to damage the screen with cutting objects and coins, which cannot be said about jewelry.
After purchasing a smartphone, the oleophobic coating of the screen suffers first of all, which is created so that the fingers glide more smoothly over the display surface. Therefore, after purchasing the device, the screen may be scratched. Experts noted that these are traces of damage to the oleophobic coating, and not directly to the screen.
The journalists summed up that the most important indicator of the protective glass of any smartphone is the balance between hardness and strength. The authors believe that hard glass does not mean durable: “The larger the area of a thin glass plate, the easier it is to break it.”
