Throat cancer risk is reduced by 50% after five years of quitting smoking

Five years after quitting smoking, the risk of throat and oral cavity cancer is reduced by 50%. This was told by the Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Oleg Salagay, writes RIA Novosti.

“According to modern data, the first positive signs of normalization of the body's work can be recorded within a few tens of minutes. One year after rejection, the risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced by 50%. In five years, the risk of throat and oral cavity cancer is reduced by 50%, ”Salagay wrote in his Telegram channel about the positive effect of quitting smoking on the human body.

From April 1 this year, a minimum price for tobacco products has been introduced in Russia. Under the new rules, the price of a pack of cigarettes cannot be lower than 108 rubles. Since February 1, Russia has banned the online sale of electronic cigarettes, vapes and nicotine-containing products. In addition, restrictions are imposed on nicotine advertising.

In May, it was reported that a test developed by scientists at Queensland University of Technology helped detect throat cancer at an early stage in a person who did not show any external signs of the disease. A saliva sample was taken from the patient, and analysis revealed the presence of DNA from the oncogenic human papillomavirus. Further examination showed that there is a malignant formation in one of the tonsils, and an operation was performed to remove it.
