Thousands of Ukrainian refugees, who fled to Britain to seek refuge after the Russian invasion found themselves at risk of homelessness and exploitation.
This is stated in a report from the British Red Cross, The Guardian reports.
A report from a humanitarian organization found that some Ukrainians faced disadvantage in protection procedures and the lack of sufficient training and ongoing support for refugee hosts.
“Since the Homes for Ukraine program began in 2022, more than 9,000 of the approximately 200,000 families housed in the UK are at risk of homelessness. This is often due to breakdowns in relationships with families who they are accepted, and difficulties with access to the private housing market, it turned out that Ukrainians are four times more likely than the general population to experience homelessness,” the organization found.
They added that in the period from February to mid-June 2024, an average of 379 people arrive from Ukraine every week.
Red Cross officials are calling for better security measures for accommodation schemes, and for the government to build on the positive practices of Ukrainian accommodation schemes and apply lessons learned to future refugee resettlement schemes.
Recall that according to the latest “Voice of Ukraine” report, the percentage of Ukrainian refugees who plan to stay abroad forever has increased.
