National Guard, police and FBI near the Capitol
Five thousand fighters of the US National Guard will remain in Washington until mid-March due to the fact that the authorities fear new unrest amid the situation with impeachment and President Joe Biden's planned appeal to Congress. RIA Novosti reported about it with reference to Fox News.
Earlier, 15 thousand National Guardsmen were transferred to the American capital to guard the Capitol. “As we continue to work on meeting the final requirements in the period after the inauguration, the National Guard has been asked to continue to support federal law enforcement agencies in the number of seven thousand fighters, and by mid-March their number will be reduced to five thousand,” the National Guard said.
The National Guardsmen are tasked with providing security, communications, medical evacuation, as well as “logistic support in the field of security.”
However, an official Fox News source said the troops would remain in Washington due to intelligence reports of future demonstrations and threats.
Earlier it was reported that five thousand national guardsmen guarding the Capitol were evicted into a cold parking lot with one shower. Politicians stood up for the National Guards, and they were allowed to return to the Capitol. The Bureau of the National Guard said that the military was sent to the parking lot because of the Congress meeting, such a measure was temporary.
Before the inauguration, the FBI checked all 25,000 National Guard fighters who were supposed to guard Washington during the event. The check was driven by fears by the authorities that some of those charged with protecting the American capital may themselves pose a threat to the future president and other high-ranking participants in the event.
