This year as then: nostalgia for the Christmas tree

by alex

This year it's Christmas like before. Corona can at least not harm the Christmas tree. About jewelry trends, care tips and nostalgia.

Glittering balls, the scent of fir, candles, the family gathers, the feast is being prepared. A last detour to the Christkindlmarkt so that the Christkind has the opportunity to bring the presents. Back home, ears perk up, no sound.

Then a loud ring. The door opens and the Christmas tree shines in its splendor. This is the magical moment of childhood. But like so much, Christmas will be different this year. Without Christmas markets, punch stands and large celebrations, the decorated tree becomes even more important. “Everything that makes up the Christmas season is gone. What we have left is the Christmas tree,” says a young man while walking in the snow in Vienna in the middle of lockdown.

What influences the Christmas tree decorations

“The Christmas tree reflects the spirit of the times,” explains Anita Gosztola, self-proclaimed Christmas ambassador and owner of the Vienna Christmas Salon in an interview with KURIER.

“This year has been difficult and dark for many people, so they go back to family, love and tradition. For this year, many choose the classic color scheme of gold and red balls, ”Gosztola explains the 2020 Christmas tree trend.

Almost all of the golden and red balls in their small salon at Franziskanerplatz 6 in the first district are already sold out. The tree decorations in the Vienna Christmas Salon come from manufacturers, from designers, sometimes from collectors or from legacies – not from mass production.

A big difference

The difference between hand-blown, hand-made Christmas tree decorations and mass-produced goods is clear to the expert and her customers: “You can see it. Hand-made balls are unique, they are made of glass and retain their color strength.

It is also a question of processing. ”The quality can be determined in terms of color, feel and the cap. High-quality balls have often engraved the manufacturer's name in the golden hat.

“The tree decorations often have a sentimental value. They are often mementos or gifts. Usually one or two special pieces are bought every year. People here focus on quality instead of quantity,” explains the Christmas ambassador.

The trends 2020

In addition to the red and gold classic, other tree decoration trends can be seen this year. The retro look is also en vogue. The vintage boom doesn't stop before Christmas either. Adorned with collector's items, in Victorian style, the famous Gablonzer glass bead jewelry and reflective balls, this tree stands for the spirit of the past Christmas again this year. The environmental and natural trend has also been introduced for several years. Some trees are hung with natural materials, wooden figures and woven straw.

From the wonderland rabbit

“The Christmas tree always corresponds to personality. You can recognize your personal style from the tree,” says Gozstola. The following applies: whatever you like is allowed. But, the expert advises, you should draw a line. Either choose one style and a maximum of two Combine up to three colors or mix completely colorful.

If the duality of colors, spheres and glass beads are not enough for you, you are increasingly turning to dazzling and fairytale figures. Here, too, the zeitgeist but also pop culture. In addition to the well-known peacocks and birds, you can also find Disney interpretations of fairy tales, such as the Nutcracker, Alice in Wonderland or Beauty and the Beast.

Top? Or mesh?

The crowning glory of the tree is the top – here, too, one has to choose wisely. Mesh? Lace or angel? “In Austria the tip is classic and elegant, but also the angel.” This has been in fashion since Empress Sisi, who is said to have been the first to put an angel at the top. Traditionally, stitches are rarely chosen in Austria, ”explains the Christmas expert.
