“This is an important stage”: an expert on the launch of a Zircon rocket from a submarine

The launch of the Zircon rocket from the Severodvinsk submarine, which took place as part of the tests, is an important stage in testing a promising hypersonic system, which in the future is planned to be used to arm the Russian fleet. Dmitry Stefanovich, a researcher at the Center for International Security of the IMEMO RAN, co-founder of the Vatfor project, said this to Rambler.

“The first launch from a submarine is a really important milestone, it was announced long ago.

The expert noted that the first tests were carried out from the surface of the submarine, but the design of the Zircon also implies launching from a depth.

“The launch was made from a surface position, because it is obvious that testing new weapons systems in an approach close to a combat situation is fraught and dangerous. No one will take such risks, so this is normal.”

An important point of these tests was that the strike was practiced against naval targets. The expert noted that the main targets of the Zircons deployed in the fleet should be the enemy aircraft carrier groups and the destruction of the missile defense systems located on its ships.

“An important point is a launch against a naval target. A reminder that the Zircon is an anti-ship missile and the development of traditional Soviet and Russian anti-ship missiles. The goal here is aircraft carrier groups, as well as the ability to hit targets at sea-based anti-missile systems.”

Stefanovich also emphasized that the tests that passed were flight design, that is, they were carried out during the development of the device. As a result, minor adjustments can still be made to its design. Full-scale state testing of the Zircons is scheduled to begin next year.

“It must be emphasized that this is a flight design test, not a state test. State tests will begin next year or at the end of this year, and only for the version for surface ships. And after the missile is adopted for surface ships, it will go into service. submarines “

The Ministry of Defense has carried out the first launch of the Zircon hypersonic missile from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine. The launch was carried out in the Barents Sea. The Ministry of Defense recognized the tests as successful – the missile hit a conditional target.
