A thick gray-brown substance with the smell of rotten eggs spread along the shores of the Sea of Marmara in Turkey. ABC newspaper writes about it.

Scientists have nicknamed this foam “sea snot”. She has already led to the death of many marine life. This phenomenon is the result of the vital activity of marine organisms, which appeared due to algal blooms. But this year it has reached a record scale: the spot is visible even from space. The images were posted on Twitter by the Istanbul Technical University. According to experts, the cause was pollution and global warming, which led to the rapid growth of algae.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to save the coast from the invasion of algae. According to him, the reason lies in unknown waste that is dumped from the Sea of Marmara. He instructed the Ministry of Environment and Urbanism to test the wastewater and urged environmentalists to develop a joint pest management plan.

Blooming algae have already caused a lot of problems for both fishermen, who, due to viscous mucus, cannot swim from the coast, and environmentalists. According to scientists, a dense layer of algae prevents sunlight from penetrating into the water column, which leads to the death of fish, snails and other marine life.
