The term for consideration of applications for Russian citizenship in the general procedure can be reduced from one year to three months. This is reported by TASS with reference to the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The corresponding bill was submitted to the State Duma by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of 2021. According to the document, the responsibility for making decisions on admission to citizenship in relation to certain categories of persons will be assigned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In particular, the measure will affect persons who are not subject to the simplified procedure for admission, as well as those who have received political asylum, refugees and military personnel under contract in the Russian Armed Forces.
The bill also proposes to give the head of state more powers to determine the categories of persons eligible for a simplified acquisition of Russian citizenship. In addition, the project assumes that a number of serious crimes against the state will entail the termination of Russian citizenship.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for automatically giving citizenship to children from mixed marriages, wherever they are. His words were heard at the 7th World Congress of Russian Compatriots Living Abroad.
