The Sparkling Wine Producers Association wanted to index the minimum retail price (MRP) for champagne. With such an initiative, the organization appealed to the Ministry of Finance of Russia, Izvestia reports.
Winemakers have asked the Ministry of Finance to raise the prices for champagne by almost 18 percent since the new year, 2022. Business representatives believe that the MRC for this drink should be increased from 169 rubles for 0.75 liters to 199 rubles. When purchasing from factories, the cost of a bottle of champagne is proposed to be designated at the level of 140 rubles instead of 118.
The Association explained such a proposal by an increase in the excise tax on sparkling wine from January 1, 2022. They added that the cost of goods has also increased. Therefore, manufacturers, observing the technologies for the production of champagne, do not fit into the minimums that are relevant for the price. However, retailers demand to supply products at minimal prices, which can lead to the emergence of cheaper and more hazardous to health counterfeit champagne.
Executive Secretary of the Federal Self-Regulatory Organization of Winegrowers and Winemakers Dmitry Kiselev stressed that high-quality Russian champagne in retail should cost at least 250 rubles, since the technology for producing the drink and raw materials are expensive for it. These factors must be reflected in the MRC, because “the production of champagne is aerobatics in winemaking.”
Auchan said they are experiencing difficulties in supplying Russian-made sparkling wines at the lowest price. This circumstance was associated with a poor harvest. “As for the price, we are fixing a slight increase of five percent compared to the same period in 2020,” the representative of the trading network emphasized.
Earlier, the Russians were warned about the rise in price of the New Year's table. The average holiday bill, including gifts, increased by 3.5 thousand rubles.
