The promise to provide the Polish army with the latest tanks instead of those that Poland sent to Ukraine, Germany cannot yet fulfill.
The official representative of the German government, Steffen Gebestrait, explained why the most modern Leopard 2A7 battle tanks have not yet arrived in Poland to replace the armored vehicles that the Polish state transferred to Ukraine. According to him, they are still under production.
According to Politico, a German government spokesman rejected reproaches from Polish President Andrzej Duda about an alleged broken promise.
“There has been a clear request from the Polish side to transfer the most modern Leopard 2A7 battle tanks to Poland, but the problem is that the Bundeswehr itself has only a small number – about 50 – of such tanks,” he said.
According to Gebestreit , most of these tanks are still in production. “They are not in a fleet or a factory. They have yet to be manufactured,” a government spokesman emphasized.
Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda accused Berlin of unfulfilled obligations to send new tanks to replace those that Poland sent to Ukraine in order to help the country defend itself in the war against Russia.
“They didn't keep that promise. And, frankly, we are very disappointed with this,” said Duda.
“The federal government is stunned,” reacted to this statement, Gebesteit said that the German government made it clear from the very beginning that it “should see what can be done”.
Recall that the leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, threatened that Poland could become the next after Ukraine, on whose territory Russia could attack.
