The Ukrainian military was the first to use FPV drones, which became a very effective tool during the war. It is the combination of effectiveness and low cost that makes them irreplaceable.

Russians are aware of all these advantages of “birds”, so they have begun to increase the production of UAVs. Defense Express editor-in-chief Oleg Katkov told Channel 24 more about the use of FPV drones by the Russians.

The enemy has increased production of drones

According to Katkov, the occupiers are massively investing in the production of FPV drones. In addition, in terms of the population of “enthusiasts” in Russia – that’s what the enemy calls volunteers – there are many times more than in Ukraine.

This should also be taken into account when we help the Armed Forces of Ukraine. With the same amount of money in Russia, there will still be more of it, because they simply have a larger population,” explained the editor-in-chief of Defense Express.

How Ukraine can deal with hostile FPV drones

As Katkov explained, the Russians’ use of FPV drones on the battlefield can be combated in a comprehensive manner:

• EW – electronic warfare;
• drones of various modifications;
• defeating the enemy on Russian territory with long-range missile weapons.

Let us add that the Ukrainian military is testing a new mobile and modular electronic warfare system, Eter, which will help the military more effectively carry out tasks at the front.

We return to a situation where there is an asymmetry in capabilities. That is, the enemy can hit the Ukrainian defense industry with all available means, but Ukraine does not have the opportunity to reach the drone production plant in Alabuga and strike so that it does not work, Oleg Katkov emphasized.

Therefore, Ukraine needs long-range weapons, because it is simply impossible to destroy a Soviet-style defense enterprise with the help of kamikaze drones.

Alabuga

As of 2019, Alabuga is the largest industrial-production economic zone in Russia. On the territory of the enterprise, mass production of Iranian military drones has been opened, with which Moscow attacks Ukrainian cities and kills Ukrainians.

The role of drones in the Russian-Ukrainian war

• The Russian army most often uses Lancet small unmanned aircraft systems during attacks on Ukraine. The drones are designed to be flown over an area, “waiting for a target to be identified before diving towards it and detonating it.”
• However, according to the Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov, Ukrainian inventors have created an analogue of the Russian Lancet drone, as well as drones similar to the Iranian Shaheds.
• Also in Ukraine they propose to simplify the procedure and allow the state customer to buy drones for civilian use. We are talking about DJI and Autel drones.
