Lindsey Graham noted the importance of allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russia with Western weapons.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham called on US President Joe Biden to allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russia with Western weapons in order to force Putin to sit down at the table negotiations.
Graham said this after a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Senate, Voice of America reports.
“President Zelensky says he wants to end this war because of negotiations. The only way to get Russia to the table is to hit them harder than we are hitting them today,” Senator Graham said.
In his opinion, no amount of money will help Ukraine unless the Ukrainian Armed Forces are strengthened to fight Russia more effectively.
“So, President Biden, if you don't allow this now, “Russia will eventually weaken Ukraine, Russia's weapons production is growing, so in the long run, not changing its military strategy will benefit Russia,” Graham warned the current head of the White House.
According to the senator, whoever the next US president is, if Biden allows Ukraine to strike deep into Russia with Western weapons, he will do the next president a “great favor.”
“So, Mr. President Biden, I know you want Ukraine to win. You have to let President Zelenskyy implement this plan. He has a plan. He has specific military goals. If he can start implementing this plan, it gives us the best hope of ending this war in 2025,” Lindsey Graham believes.
At the same time, he does not believe Putin's threats to increase escalation in the event of shelling deep into Russia with Western weapons.
“Every time we give them [the Ukrainians] more equipment, Putin threatens. If you let Putin make policy, we lose. Don't let him make policy. The policy change I want is to hit legitimate military targets that Russia uses to kill innocent civilians and terrorize the Ukrainian people,” the senator responded.
Earlier, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said when Ukraine might receive permission to strike deep into Russian territory with Western weapons.
The NYT also learned US intelligence data on why Biden fears permission for deep strikes into Russian territory.
