War correspondent Fred Kaplan explained what the strikes on the Russian city mean, writes Slate.
In his opinion, the attacks indicate two things. The first is that there are no longer any red lines, everything is blurred, including the border between Russia and Ukraine.
“Vladimir Putin’s threats can be seriously ignored, and the United States actually allowed Ukrainian strikes on internationally recognized Russian territory – so that American weapons did not appear in them,” he believes.
Although, Kaplan argues, even if it turns out that Ukraine was hit on Russian territory by an American missile, Putin will not start a war with NATO.
Second, as evidenced by such strikes, neither Ukraine nor Russia, which is intensively attacking Ukrainian territory with missiles, has any other ways to significantly influence the course of the war.
“Therefore, the parties resort to attacks on the rear, not having the strength to change the situation on the front line,” he added.
What is known about the explosions in Belgorod
4 January in the region reported another attack on the city. They say that dozens of air targets were shot down on the approach to Belgorod. Despite this, windows in high-rise buildings and more than 30 cars were damaged in the city.
Almost every day in Belgorod an air raid alert sounds and air defense is in operation. As a result, the regional authorities decided to suspend the operation of shopping centers in the city for several days, and residents are recommended to install an application that will warn about the missile danger.
And the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, as journalists write, that they do not condemn the strikes on Belgorod. In their opinion, this is a legitimate act of protection.
Meanwhile, Russia responded to such a statement. The idiotic ex-President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev said that the Russian Federation never liked the French and recalled the previous war with France.
Ukrainian special services claim that Ukraine is not targeting civilian targets, and the events in the center of Belgorod are a consequence of the irresponsible work of Russian air defense, sources told Suspilne.”
