“The worst loss”: hackers learned about US sanctions against Russia

Hackers who hacked into SolarWinds' systems in 2020 could gain access to information about the US sanctions policy towards the Russian Federation. About this, as reported by TASS, sources told Reuters.

SolarWinds' Orion software was hacked in 2020. The hackers injected a virus into a program update that was later downloaded by thousands of the company's customers, including US government agencies and large American companies.

Sources claim that among the information obtained by the hackers was information about Washington's sanctions policy towards the Russians, as well as information about counterintelligence checks that concerned Russia. One of the sources called this data “the worst of the losses.”

In addition, the attackers allegedly had information about the measures that the United States is taking in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier it was reported that during the attack, hackers gained access to the unclassified networks of the US Department of Justice, as well as to the correspondence of employees of the Treasury, Trade and Homeland Security Ministries.

SolarWinds Inc. is an American company developing industrial software for managing networks, systems and infrastructure. On December 13, 2020, The Washington Post reported that several government agencies had been hacked through SolarWinds' Orion software.

The victims of the attack were the US Treasury Department, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the US Department of Commerce, the Department of Homeland Security, and the cybersecurity company FireEye.

US Attorney General William Barr said the SolarWinds hack was most likely carried out by Russia.
