They became the world's first same-sex twins to identify as different genders in 2007, when George began presenting as a man after coming out as transgender. He used to go by the name Reba, inspired by singer Reba McEntire, because he didn't like his name rhyming with his sister's.

The twins lived separately in a two-room apartment in Pennsylvania. Each of them had their own room – they spent the night in each one in turn – and tried to live their own lives as best they could. They took turns pursuing their separate hobbies. They said they effectively “switched off” while in each other's room. They also showered separately, using the shower curtain as a barrier while one showered and the other stood by the tub.

Every time they were asked if they would ever like to be separated, Laurie and George always answered “no.” “Are we going to be separated? Absolutely not,” George said in the 1997 documentary. “My theory is: why fix something that isn't broken?”.

The twins defied medical predictions that they wouldn't live past 30. In 2015, they became the oldest conjoined twins in history.

Lori and George are survived by their father, six brothers and sisters, several nephews and nieces, and many friends.

Recall that recently the oldest man on the planet died in Venezuela . Juan Vicente Perez passed away at the age of 114.

Subsequently, the Guinness Book of Records named the new holder of this title. He became 111-year-old John Alfred Tinniswood from England.
